As part of monthly screening of documentaries under 'Point Of View', Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Documentary Circle of Hyderabad and the Alliance Francaise, is screening "Food, Inc.", on 16th October.
Food, Inc. is a 2008 American documentary that deals with corporate farming in the US. It was an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature.
THe film is narrated by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser. It tells us that though we have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, and even tomatoes that won't go bad, we also have new strains of E. coli (the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually).
The US' food supply is controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment, it says. The documentary showcases assembly lines of food production, involving conditions that are brutal and abusive for the animals, and tells stories from hidden cameras at slaughterhouses and processing plants.
Entry to the screening is free. Please contact Goethe-Zentrum at 6552-6443 or Alliance Francaise at 2770-0734 / 2770-0736 for further details.
