It is easy to introduce this man. Remember Bakra Qiston Pe? That hugely popular Pakistani stage play that Indians would circulate amongst each other in the video-cassette days and the jokes from which became a cult? Then came Budha Ghar Pe Hai. By then Umer Sharif had his fan clubs as far and wide as Mackenna's Gold's Omar Sharif. The former's ones were jollier.
Umer Sharif is a legend. Movies like Kundan, Aag Hi Aag, Aawargi, Dushmano Kay Dushman, Jhutay Raees, Chupay Rustam, Laad Sahab, Khotay and many more cast him as the comic element. He directed movies such as Mr. 420, Miss Charlie and Miss Fitna, out of which Mr. 420 was the biggest success.
In Karachi, he is known to have single-handedly revived the cultural scene, while also having refurbished Rex Cinema and turning into an auditorium. He did the same with Shama in Lahore. His movies have won a number of Nigar awards in Pakistan, while he himself won the best actor award for Mr. 420. Quite an achievement for a man who is essentially a comedian. But then, like we said, he is a legend.
The 1st of April will be a legendary day in Hyderabad as Umer Sharif comes to India for the first time and performs first and foremost at the Lalita Kala Thoranam. His standup comedy show will start at 1830 hrs and Azam Khan from Hyderabad will keep up the giggles in the interstitial time. Passes are available at various outlets around town.
