The University Of Hyderabad, along with Hyderabad Bangalee Samity and Department of Culture, is presenting Basanta Utsav: Roop-Raag, Rabindra Jayanti: 150 years celebrations from 4th to 6th February at the Rabindra Bharathi auditorium.
As part of the utsav, the Dance Department of the university is presenting Chandalika, a dance drama in Kuchipudi style, on 4th February. The ballet is being performed by 10 students of the dance department, and is directed and choreographed by Dr. Jonnalagadda Anuradha.
The story is based on the 1933 Bengali play "Chandalika" written by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore about Prakriti, an untouchable girl, and her mother Maya who practises black magic to heal ailing people. The duo is obstracised by the society because they are untouchables. The girl meets a Buddhist monk Ananda, and adopts Buddhism. She meets the Buddha, who addresses the issue of untouchability, and Prakriti ultimately attains Nirvana.
