Chair - Bengali Play: Events in Hyderabad

REVIEW FOR CHAIR - BENGALI PLAY

Chaitanya Art Theatres and Samaikhya Bharathi, in collaboration with the Department Of Culture, AP, are organizing Vizai Bhaskar's Bahu Bhasha Natakotsav. This is a festival of 9 Telugu plays written by D Vizai Bhaskar, translated into different Indian languages. The festival is from 16th to 19th March, at Ravindra Bharathi.

On 16th, the first day of the festival, Chair (Kurchi) is the 2nd play to be staged, at 7pm. The play will be presented by Rangasram from West Bengal. Directed by Sandip Bhattacharya, the play has been translated by Asit Mukherjee. It depicts the game of the Chair, depriving the depressed from the democratic positions and powers conferred upon the Dalits by the Constitution. This play bagged the prestigious Nandi Award for 'Best Script' at the State Level Competitions in 1999.

Born in Ampolu village in Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh, D Vizai Bhaskar received his Masters Degree in English Literature. He started his career as a lecturer in English, but soon switched over to public service as Municipal Commissioner, in which capacity he has seen different cross sections of society, and the boundaries of human greed and mutual exploitation.

He has produced 22 plays, and his scripts have bagged a number of Nandi Awards, as well as the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University Sahitya Puraskar. He has also published a volume of poetry. Ruthwik, Puliswari, Hiranya Garbha, Kabeerdas, Sramanakam, Chitram, Shatruvu and Bapu Cheppina Maata are his other popular dramas on the Telugu stage.
