Praise of the Almighty renders almost any song melodious. Tonite, then, it is only a good thing getting even better.

On the occasion of the 114th birth anniversary of Paramacharya Shankarendra Saraswati, Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society is organising a Carnatic vocal duet by the Serugudi Sisters, at the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham in Skandagiri, on 31st May.

The Serugudi Sisters, Rama and Geetha, were inducted into music by Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer. Later, they came under the tutelage of R K Srikantan and Rajam Iyer, and their skills are currently being honed by T R Subramaniam, one of the most respected teachers of Carnatic music. The siblings have assimilated several good aspects of Carnatic music from these gurus of merit, and with clear, full-throated balanced singing, they easily impress their audiences.

Paramacharya Shankarendra Saraswati was the 68th Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. Born on 20th May 1894, he was inducted as the Acharya at a very young age of 13, and served as the head of the peetham for 87 years before attaining samadhi on January 1994, four months before his centenary birth anniversary. His long tenure as Pithadipati is considered to have been the golden era of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. Even though he was highly respected among devotees for his Hindu teachings and discourses, he had always advocated secularism.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society was founded in 2000, with the objective of imparting and spreading Carnatic vocal music to music lovers of all ages. It was established by S Chandrasekhar, a renowned vocalist, who has a diploma in Carnatic vocal and teaches about 50 students, both young and old. Every Sunday, he also teaches Annamacharya Keertanas from 3pm to 5pm, free of cost to anyone eager to learn.

The society also organises various music concerts of local upcoming and established artistes, and renowned classical musicians from Chennai.

The entry to the programs is free. For further details, please contact S Chandrasekhar at 2780-5161/93910-11704/98661-87955.
