Black With Equal is a satirical black comedy that takes an unsentimental look at contemporary society, ultimately becoming a scathing comment on the human condition. The play opens with an Annual General Meeting of a housing society, which starts out amicably, but later, after a series of bizarre circumstances, is propelled to its doom. The meeting, which symbolizes law, order and civility, goes to pieces when fear, mistrust, suspicion and prejudice take over and shatter the basis of a secular society based on mutual respect. The mask of civility is peeled off, layer by layer, and the core of bigotry is exposed, becoming an ugly mirror of the current human situation. Unity does not mean uniformity. Yet we have come to a stage where we are distrustful of difference of any kind - whether of culture, caste, community, gender or language. In these communally troubled times, this play becomes particularly relevant as it reminds us of the age old truth that harmony does not mean homogeneity.
