The ICONART Gallery of Dr. Avani Rao Gandra is organising an exhibition of paintings titled Babas And Bibis by Shyamal Mukherjee, from 22nd January to 3rd February.
Babas & Bibis conveys a sampling of Indian middle class life, especially artisans who enjoy their occupation of entertaining others. These men and women are performers, seen in the paintings with their entertainment paraphernalia of musical instruments and scrolls. These people are painted in pairs or as a larger family.
Shyamal Mukherjee has a Bachelors in Visual Arts, and a Masters in Visual Arts from the Rabindra Bharathi University, Kolkata. An experienced artist, he has participated in over 32 solo exhibitions in all over the country, and abroad in Sri Lanka and Singapore. His has won awards from the Rabindra Bharathi in 1986, the Tata Steel in 1992 and the Birla Academy during 1995-96.
