The Kathak Kala Kshetra is presenting a devotional whistle music concert by Whistle Wizard M Venkata Ramana Reddy, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, this Saturday. Ramana Reddy, along with M V Subrahmanya Prasad on the mridangam, Muralidhar on the violin, Jaiprakash on the tabla and Laxminarayana on the keyboard, will start with Vatapi Ganapathim, followed by Ghantasala's Namo Venkatesha and some Annamacharya and Ramadas keertanas.
Venkata Ramana Reddy completed his P G Diploma in Carnatic Vocal from the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, in 1994. Since then, he has been practising the art of whistling rigorously, under the influence of Eelapaata Raghuramaiah. He has performed at Pune, Lucknow, Calicut and at many venues in Hyderabad. He has been part of R P Patnaik's latest music album, too.
Kathak Kala Kshetra was started by Pandit Anju Babu, a Kathak dancer, choreographer and percussionist, in 1980. He himself was a popular dancer, having performed in countries like the USA, France, England and Japan. Through the institute, he organises various programs, like the annual Deccan Dance Festival, bhajans, dance recitals and music concerts.
Pandit Babu teaches many students in this institute, and has even conducted international training programs with Anjali Papa, Director of the Anjali Centre of Houston, where he trained many Indian and American children in Kathak.
