Saptaswara Cultural Organization is organising the Dakshina Bharatiya Sangeeta Navaratrotsavamulu from 2nd to 10th November, at the Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The nine-day festival has two music concerts daily, featuring special kritis of the Music Trinity (Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry), specially Dikshitar's Navagraha and Navavarna kritis.
Today, the fifth day of the festival, Panduranga Sarma will be performing a Carnatic vocal recital, the first recital for the day, starting at 6:15pm. Panduranga Sarma learnt Carnatic music initially from Mulukutla Sastry, and then from Puranam Purushottama Sastry. Currently, he is undergoing an advanced training from the living legend D K Pattammal.
Sarma has been performing since two decades, and follows a sampradaya system of kutcheri. He has performed at various sabhas of the country, winning appreciation from various vidwans and rasikas. He now works for the Indian Overseas Bank in Hyderabad, and also trains students in Carnatic vocal music.
The event is organised by Saptaswara, a cultural organization founded by K S R Balakrishna Sastry. He is a retired head-master who has also performed as an artiste on radio and TV, from 1952 to 2005. A disciple of Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, he has performed a number of times with him.
