At an age when most little girls are being told what to do, this one had all
the big men listening to her. And they all enjoyed it, if her track record is
anything to go by. That's Vijayalakshmi Subrahmanyam for you, a girl who gave
her first concert at the age of 12. And as part of its monthly cultural programs,
SICA is bringing her to town today for a Carnatic recital.
Vijayalaxmi Subramanyam was born in a family with a rich musical heritage, and started training in music at the age of 5. She learnt first under K Padmanabhan of the Swathi Thirunal Academy, and then under Sangeetha Bhushanam K Krishna Swamy of the Annamalai University. She had her advance training in music under Vidwan T R Subramanyam, V R Krishnan and S Rajam.
She gave her first concert at the age of 12, and is now an A-grade artist with All India Radio, Chennai. She has given performances throughout the country, and has also participated in the Asia Pacific Music Festival at New Zealand in 1992.
Many titles have been conferred upon her, "Gaana Sevaratnam" from the Purandar Dasa Mahotsava Sabha, Chennai, and "Sangeetha Sikhamani" from the Andhra Social and Cultural Association, Chennai, to name a few.
Entry to this program is by invitation for SICA members, and by tickets for non-members.
