Sutradhar is presenting its 18th workshop production, 'The Untouched', at the Telugu University Auditorium, adjacent to Public Gardens, on 22nd December at 7:30 pm.
The workshop was conducted by Vinay Varma, who also translated the play from the Marathi original 'Asparsh', written by Subhash Sonavane. 'The Untouched' is directed by Prof. Bhaskar Shewalkar, and features Aditi Sharma as the crippled and bed-ridden Julie, and Deepti Girotra as her matron nun. The music is designed by Shanti Mani and Vinay Varma. The duration of the play is 45 minutes.
Life or death, sexuality or spirituality, the body or the soul - what is the ultimate reality? Is denial of the body the only path to a higher realm of consciousness? Is succumbing to bodily needs an obstacle to spiritual progress? Is there a middle path after all? Who decides what is right and what is wrong? The play portrays these polarities in the 2 characters - Julie, a crippled young girl, and a nun, who is married to Lord Jesus. Through their dialogues, we encounter this constant battle that rages in most of us.
For Julie, it is the body that is real. She is a girl who is frustrated despite having all the wealth she desires. The needs of her body are not met – who would love a girl with ‘feet of clay’? Julie, who is on the brink of death, longs for life, a husband, love, and fulfillment - be it for just one night.
In contrast to Julie is the nun, who is satisfied with her circumstance, whose entire life has revolved in the service of the Lord and who is to be wedded to Lord Jesus. The Lord is her entire world. For her, the body is temporary, something that will perish, sooner or later. It is the soul that is everlasting, transcending physical death.
One night, Julie meets the man of her dreams. Where does this relationship culminate? What impact does this relationship have on the nun? The play deals with the climactic moment of transformation that comes into these 2 women, and the circumstances that lead to it.
The play is meant for a mature audience. It may not be suitable for viewing for those below the age of 15. The audience is advised to exercise discretion.
Entry is by donor passes of Rs.50 each, available with Sutradhar. They could also be bought online from www.buzzintown.com and www.bookmyshow.com.
