Sitar player Gaurav Mazumdar, described in superlatives the world over, where his young fame has already spread, is going to be in Hyderabad on the 13th of January for a concert that can safely be described as scintillating, even in advance.
No newcomer to Hyderabad, this virtuoso is a student of the great Pt. Ravi Shankar himself, and it is no mean feat that he has emerged from his shadows already to be full-fledged maestro in his own right. Mazumdar has been a student of vocal music, and then the violin before he took to the sitar.
Some of the telling projects he has been a part of, include the composition of music for the dance ballet 'Siddhartha' based on book by Nobel Laureate Herman Hesse, a joint presentation “East meets west” with Daniel Hope, collaboration with and composition for the English Chamber Orchestra and a performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.
He presented a raaga of his called Akanksha at the Vatican, to celebrate the new millenium, and performed with Philip Glass in his latest creation 'Orion' which was premiered in Athens to commemorate the Olympics'04. He has also created the beautiful ragas of Shiva Kalyani, Aishani, Madhupriya, Shivangi and Saraswati Malhar.
