The Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation is organizing an interactive session with the renowned theatre and cinema actor, Farooque Shaikh, at ITC Kakatiya. The session, titled 'Safar' is on 18th July, at 7:45pm.
'Safar' is a session conceived and designed by Mohammad Ali Baig as part of his Celebrating Theatre series - a series started Mohammad Ali Baig's, that brought to Hyderabad many theatre personalities including the late Habib Tanvir, Shabana Azmi, Javed Siddiqui, Arundhati Nag, and Rajat Kapur. The evening starts with Shaikh sharing his journey to the theatre with the audience and the media, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
The session is a part of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the demise of theatre doyen Qadir Ali Baig, by the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation. The commemoration series began with the Foundation's musical, 'Resham Ki Dor', which was staged last month. The mission of the Celebrating Theatre series is to spread theatre awareness and to encourage more and more people to join theatre.
Popular cinema, television and theatre actor Farooque Shaikh debuted on the silver screen with M S Sathyu's 'Garam Hawa', and was also seen in Satyajit Ray's 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi', Yash Chopra's 'Noorie', Muzaffar Ali's 'Umrao Jaan' and Sai Paranjpe's 'Chashme Baddoor', among others, and many television productions including Chamatkaar, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai and Ji Mantriji. Having begun his career with IPTA in Mumbai, Shaikh has done theatre, too, and a few of his popular plays have been Tumhari Amrita with Shabana Azmi, and Aapki Sonia with Sonali Bendre.
The Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation was founded by Mohammed Ali Baig, who belongs to the field of advertising. The Foundation was set up in the memory of his father Qadir Ali Baig, who was a doyen of Hindustani theater. It was established in an attempt at revival of theater, which had lost its sheen in India. The foundation has on board danseuse Vani Ganapathy, artistes Rohini Hattangadi, Suhasini Maniratnam and Urmila Matondkar, lyricist Javed Akhtar and director M S Sathyu.
The foundation not only stages plays every month, but also imparts basic training in all aspects of theatre, in order to nurture young talent Begum Razia Qadir Ali Baig, wife of Qadir Ali, is the Chairperson of the foundation, while Sathyu is the National Director, and Mohammad Ali is the President.
