The Hyderabad Film Club is screening a Chinese film, Red Cherry (Hong Ying Tao), on 27th December, at the Sarathi Studios in Ameerpet. Directed by Ye Daying, the movie features Guo Ke-Yu, Vladmill Nizmiroff and Xu Xiaoling among others.
The film was based on the true story of Chuchu, a 13-year-old Chinese girl, and Luo Xiaoman, a 12-year-old Chinese boy, who were sent to Moscow, Russia, in the 1940s, and enrolled into an international boarding school. There they have many great and difficult experiences as they try to survive during World War II.
The children's real encounter with fate begins as kanikuli (summer break) arrives, and Chuchu accompanies her class to a children's camp in Byelorussia, while Xiaoman remains in Moscow. Then, Russia is invaded by Germany's Operation Barbarossa.
Red Cherry is basically an account of the two orphans' parallel experiences of the war. The film was China's biggest domestic box office hit in 1996, and has won many accolades, including at least one Oscar nomination.
