The Swara Bharathi Social and Cultural Academy was established in 1992 at Siddipet, by Perini Srinivas, where Perini Tandavam and Andhra Natyam are taught. Both these forms of dancing are facing the threat of extinction.
Perini dance signifies prerna or inspiration for the warriors on the eve of a war. The warriors performed this powerful dance in front of the idol of Nataraja or Lord Shiva, before they left for the battlefield. The kings of the Kakatiya dynasty in Warangal patronized this form.
Andhra Natyam, originally called the Lasya Nartana, was practised only by temple dancers. It is as old as the people of Andhra. This dance form was revived by Dr Nataraja Ramakrishna. Srinivas is engaged in the revival of both these forms, and is now teaching them to about 60 students.
He is a disciple of Dr Nataraja Ramakrishna, and has performed in many states of India, most recently in the presence of many politicians who arrived for the 82nd Congress Plenary Session. He is a B-grade artiste of the AIR, Hyderabad.
