'Chandalika' was the chosen dance form for the month end performances, sponsored
by the Cultural Department. On one hand the department is striving to rejuvenate
the dying forms by patronizing them, and on the other hand it is going on presenting
the shows of much established institutions and their popular, repetitive productions.
'Chandalika' is one such dance ballet of the Kuchipudi Dance Academy of Shobha
Naidu, which was staged for over 30 times at Ravindra Bharathi itself.
This is a choreography authored by Rabindranath Tagore, based on the sensitive story of an untouchable girl. Shobha Naidu herself appears as the poor little girl wearing patched clothes who is spurned by society. Dejected, she meets a monk only to become philosophical in the end. One only wished the department were selective about patronizing real art of needy artists rather than already popular presentation, which will anyway find its way through numerous private cultural organizations and publicity stunts.
