Nobody needs an introduction to Bhagavathula Sethuram. And if you are a disciple of his, that's enough introduction. Everyone, however, needs as many performances from them as they can get. Here's the latest treat for the aficionados in town.
The Kuchipudi Nritya Nilayam, together with Chaitanya Art Theatres, is presenting a bouquet of Kuchipudi dance items by B Dhenuka and K Keerthana, on 15th February at Ravindra Bharathi. Latha Prasad, Aparna and Nalini will provide dance support for Dhenuka and Keerthana for two of the items. All the performers are the disciples of Nandi awardee and legendary dancer Bhagavathula Sethuram, also the choreographer of the recital. The items to be presented are as under:
Pushpanjali - An item that pays tribute to the gramadevata of Kuchipudi village, Bala Tripura Sundari, as Akhilandeshwari, Amba and Parameshwari. Also welcomes poets, pandits, singers, rasikas and the audience to the recital. The performers are Dhenuka and Keerthana.
Modamuna - A King Shahaji's Vinayaka Stuti in praise of Lord Ganesh, by Dhenuka and Keerthana.
Takkuvemi Manaku - A Ramadasu keertana narrating the dashavataras of Lord Vishnu, by Dhenuka and Keerthana.
Baludaina Markandeeyudu - A Sivaleela on Bhakta Markandeya where Yamaraja comes to carry away young Markandeya, a devotee of Lord Shiva, who's finished his share of life. The sequence of events that lead to Shiva confronting Yama and gifting Markandeya his life, will be presented by Dhenuka as Yamaraja and Lord Shiva, and Keerthana as Markandeya.
Aalokaye Sakhi, Balakrishnam - A Saint Narayanatheertha tarangam, where apsaras roaming across the sky spot the young Krishna and converse among themselves about the beauty of the lord. This item will be performed by Dhenuka and Keerthana.
Ramayana Shabdam - A renowned and frequently performed item giving utmost importance to steps and dance presentation, this is about Lord Rama's early life, starting from his birth till his coronation as the Crown Prince of Ayodhya. Will be presented by Latha Prasad and Kumari Aparna.
Pushpa Vilapamu - Written by Karunasree Jandhyala Papayya Sastry and sung by Ghantasala, this song with beautiful lyrics was choreographed by various leading dancers. It is a request by flowers to humans not to pluck them for worship and instead enjoy their beautiful colors in nature. This item will be presented by Dhenuka and Keerthana, along with Latha Prasad, Nalini and Aparna.
Brahma Mokkate - A Saint Tallapaka Annamacharya keertana urging devotees to recite Lord Venkateshwara's name, the ultimate word for attaining enlightenment. Brought to you by Dhenuka and Keerthana.
The orchestra ensemble for the recital is Bhagavathula Sethuram with the nattuvangam, Sarada Reddy and Amalapuram Kanna Rao on vocals, Nageshwar Rao on the mridangam, Subbalaxmi on the violin, and Dattatreya with the flute. The credits for the effects and make-up will go to Sridharacharya and Suresh respectively.
The special guest invitees are Rallabandi Kavita Prasad, Director of Dept. of Culture; Dr N Bhaktavachala Reddy, Registrar of Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University; Hamsa Awardee Sarala Kumari, Director of Natyasthal; P Vijay Babu, Gudipudi Srihari and Mohd. Rafee, Senior Journalists; and Nandi Awardee Master Kaushik Babu, movie & TV Artiste.
Kuchipudi Nritya Nilayam was started in 1958 by Late Bhagavatula Rama Kotaiah, and got registered in 1962. The institution has, over a period of time, produced many renowned artistes and ballets. Following in those footsteps, this tradition is being spread to all corners of AP, and across the globe, by his disciple and son, Bhagavatula Sethuram.
Sethuram is an Asst. Professor in the Department of Dance at the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, and is a recipient of the Nandi Award for his excellent choreography and performance of the Kuchipudi ballet Geethagovindam. He has choreographed many outstanding dance ballets, like Ramayana, Bhagavadgeeta and Girija Kalyanam. He has also contributed his art to social welfare, by directing ballets like Lakshmana Rekha and War & Peace that deal with atrocities against women.
He has been awarded the Saraswati Award, the Prathibha Puraskaram, the Ugadi Puraskaram, the Nrithya Kinnera Award by the Delhi Telugu Academy and the Excellence Award by the Andhra Maha Sabha in Mauritius. He has performed in various European countries, USA, UK, Singapore, Dubai, Sharjah and so on, in addition to giving numerous performances in various cities and towns of India.
