The Alliance Francaise of Hyderabad, in association with the Hyderabad Film Club and the French Embassy in India, is screening a French film, Nickel And Dime (A La Petite Semaine), on 13th July, at Sarathi Studios.
Directed by Sam Karmann, the film has Gerard Lanvin, Jacques Gamblin and Clovis Cornillac playing the central characters.
Based on the true story of Desir Carre, a petty criminal who decided - at the age of 40 - to begin acting after several stays in jail, Nickel And Dime follows a group of criminals in the working-class neighborhood of Saint-Ouen in Paris.
Jacques is 50 and just out of jail. He wants to find a real job - a tough goal when there aren't many around. Francis is 40 and lives with his mother, Colette. He has also had it with petty crime, and decides to take acting classes with Camille, the pretty waitress at Chez-Roger. It is difficult for him to resist the temptation of fast money-making that comes with crime.
For Didier, 35, life is an adventure, a game. Although his wife Josiane is pregnant, he wants to be a hero, make it big and take risks.
The criminals meet daily at Chez-Roger, a bar, to share their problems and plan their next gig. Their lives are clearly more about being "nickled and dimed" then living the "big-time crook" lifestyle.
