National award winning actress and danseuse Shobana is in town to render her dance ballet Maya Ravan, along with her troupe, on 18th September, at Ravindra Bharati. The performance will begin at 10am.
Maya Ravan is a 2-hour ballet to showcase the spirit of the Indian epic, Ramayana. The medium of communication here is a union of hand gestures and body movements of Indian classical dances, with Bharatnatyam, Mohiniattam, film dancing and Kathakali gestures all thrown in. The ballet is based on the life of the demon King Ravan who rules over the kingdom of Lanka.
The ballet portrays the character of Ravan, an ambitious and brave yet over-confident and stubborn personality, and also shows his quest to defeat Lord Rama by kidnapping Lord Rama’s wife Sita. Rama befriends a tribe of primates, led by Hanuman, who vow to assist him in his quest to bring back Sita. Hanuman goes to Lanka to mediate and bring back Sita without bloodshed, but soon, ominous signs of war cloud the horizon.
The ballet has been choreographed and directed by Shobana, and the production is narrated in English by some big names from the Indian film industry, including Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Milind Soman, Suhasini Maniratnam, Revathy, Rohini, Tabu, Sameer Sony and Mohanlal. Shobana has staged the production in Mumbai, Chennai, and abroad, too.
