At 20,000 concerts in his lifetime spanning 75 years, this man has given one concert
nearly everyday of his life. His disciples include the flutist Dr. Prapancham
Seetharam. He was an A-top artist with the AIR, the highest grade awarded by the
AIR. If you haven't guessed by now, it could only be that you are just starting
out in the field of classical music. And for the rest, yes, it is Annavarapu Ramaswamy
that we are talking about.
A disciple of Gaayaka Saarvabhouma Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Panthulu, Ramaswamy
learnt music along with Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna. Hi gave his first
public performance at the age of 9. Working as a staff artist at the AIR at Vijayawada
from 1948 to 1986, he taught hundreds of students for free - most of them are
now working in the AIR or as teachers in music colleges. Some of the innumerable
titles that he has been awarded are Nada Sudharnava and Kala Saraswati.
On the eve of his 75th birthday, the disciples of this great violinist, along
with Amrutha Varshini, a cultural organization, are honoring him in a manner that
befits the legend that he is. There will be a suvarna kankana dharana and
a kanakabhishekam, and he will be awarded the title of Sangeetha Sadguru
Sarvabhouma. The occasion will have people of the stature of Nookala Chinnasatyanarayana,
Yella Venkateswara Rao, Palagummi Viswanatham and Neti Srirama Sarma gracing it.
