La Cienega is a stunning deconstruction of Argentine race and class politics by debutante director Lucrecia Martel. The movie has been shot in a mesmerizing documentary style with a languorous narrative that takes the audience into the dark and humid reality of the Mecha and Tali families. It is set in the treacherous swamps of Argentina. The action takes place near the town of La Ciénega.
Mecha has an accident in which she suffers from injures to her chest. She has no one to help, and so it is up to her daughter, Momi, to take her to the hospital. Mecha's adult son José is summoned from the Buenos Aires home he shares with his father's ex-mistress, Mercedes, in order to help his mother recover.
Tali's family, by contrast, is an enlightened, hard working middle-class household living in the nearby town, with attentive and loving parents and well-behaved children. Running into her cousin by accident at the hospital, Tali decides that her family should visit Mecha's estate to extract Momi from her mother's fate, and take her on a vacation to the La Mandragora.
