Yuvakalavahini, in association with Saripally Kondala Rao, is organising Dr. Akkineni Nageshwara Rao Nataka Kala Parishad State Level Padya & Gadya Nataka Competitions 2007, from 10th to 14th September, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. A total of four gadya natakas (prose drama), like Aatma Katha, Kabir Das, Rangula Ratnam and You, and five padya natakas (verse drama), like Nartanashala, Sri Khadga Tikkana, Ye Velugulaki Prasthanam, Bhukailash and Chiruthonda Nambi will be staged during five day competitions.
Today, the second day, Kabir Das is the gadya nataka to be staged by Vidyanagar Cultural Association from Hyderabad. The play is written by D Vijay Bhaskar and directed by Duggirala Someshwara Rao. Kabir Das was a great saint of the 15th century. Nothing is known about is his parents and his birth, but it is believed that he was born in 1440, near Varanasi. He grew up in a Muslim weaver family, but some say he was really the son of a Brahmin widow, and was adopted by a Muslim childless couple.
In his early days, he studied under Guru Ramananda, a great Hindu scholar. The play deals with the later part of Kabir Das' life, when he teaches both faiths. He had written a number of poems that were later translated into English by Rabindranath Tagore, thus letting the world know of this great saint. His poems were even appreciated by British and American authors.
The best play in each of the categories, both gadya and padya nataka, will receive Rs. 15,000 each and all participating plays will be given Rs. 10,000 each.
