A weeklong festival of folk art and cultural forms of Andhra Pradesh called Janapada
Utsava Vedika, being organized by the Janapada Kala Vedika, will start on
the 17th of this month. The festival will see about 1,350 artists from all over
Andhra Pradesh performing. About 76 popular art/cultural forms, including dances,
dramas, instrumental performances and storytelling traditions of the state, will
Artists will present the popular art forms in five different languages of Andhra Pradesh - Gond, Koya, Urdu, Lambada and Telugu. Also, popular forms like Chindu Bhagavatam, Viranatyalu, Karrasamu, Gurravayyalu, Tolu Bommalata, Kati Bapalu, Gusadi, Dappu, Urumulu, Merphia and Qawwali will be performed.
Traditional folk and popular artists will be here from Nalgonda, East Godavari, Nellore, Kurnool, Nizamabad, Warangal, Anantapur, Vijayanagaram, Mahboobnagar, Visakhapatnam, Khammam, Adilabad and Ranga Reddy districts.
The festival also includes discussions on art forms, their history and context. The festival is being organized to recognize/study popular culture and the disappearing folk traditions. The problems faced by the artists in meeting ends will also be discussed. Eminent filmmaker Mrinal Sen will inaugurate the festival. Kuchipudi exponent Nataraja Ramakrishna, B V Raghavalu (the CPI (M) State Secretary) and M N Sharma (academician) will be among other present at the inaugural function.
