Smirnoff Zone is bringing Island Paradise to India by getting the best of the
Ibiza genre of music. On its promotional tour traveling cities like Pune, Mumbai,
Guwahati, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Delhi and Goa, this
evening Smirnoff Zone is at Hyderabad, and will present music by DJ Gareth Cooke
(Ministry of Sound, UK). The show will be hosted by Nikhil Chinappa and DJ Ivan.
Gareth has been interested in dance music since growing up in his father's pub in Chertsey, Middlesex. In 1985, his father hired out the back room to promoters who played soul, jazz and funk. When one of the resident DJs did not turn up Gareth stepped up to the turntables. And his career moved from strength to strength hereon. He became a regular face at some of the seminal events of the era that pioneered the dance culture. And after attending the first Soul and Jazz weekender, he joined the 1988 exodus to Ibiza.
Caught up in the Acid House movement, Gareth took inspiration from Danny Rampling, Jose Padilla and the styles of Boys' Own and Flying DJs. Between 1988 and 1998, he started his own night in Windsor called Schnozzcumber, inspired by nights like Spectrum, Monkey Drum and Rage After.
He soon went into production. He teamed up with Aston Harvey (Freestylers) and Paul Woods (then of City Sounds, and more recently Cream). They remixed over the next four years some of dance music's biggest names including Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Eternal, Mary J Blige, Brown Stone, M People and Ace of Base to name but a few. Gareth never lost his passion for live events, and continued to regularly DJ at the Ministry of Sound and on their world tours.
In 1998, Gareth joined the Ministry of Sound as their Saturday night Rulin promoter, adding his own style to the greatest force in Clubland. By popular demand from Ministry of Sound members, at the start of 2001 he was officially made a Ministry of Sound resident.
