This story is as old as the Mahabharata itself (see, sometimes we make pretty
profound observations!), but a more interesting age is that of the organization
that is staging it. Sahiti Art Theaters is now 50 years old, and going strong,
too. It has now diversified geographically - the Guntur based theater organization
is now in Hyderabad, and has already staged 6 dramas here in its 6 months here,
including the Gayopakhyanam itself once. The others, too, are all mythological
Gayopakhyanam itself has been staged over 50 times by the organization. Originally
written by the famous Chilakamarthi Lakshmi Narasimham and directed by Aaseerwadam,
this 30-year-old play is the story of the war between Lord Krishna and Arjuna
when the latter offers mercy to Gaya who is sentenced to death by the Lord for
accidentally spitting (ouch!) in the Lord's palms as he holds them out for giving
aarghyam. Of course, no one can win in such a war, and sure enough, Shiva
intervenes and makes peace between the fast friends.
Krishna is being played by Sayeeduru, Arjuna by Cherukuri Sriramulu Choudary and
Gaya by K Raman in this 2-1/2 hour play featuring 9 male and 2 female artists.
