There's always a melody that people associate with their childhood. For most Telugus
this melody sprang from one man, Ghantasala Venkateshwar Rao. This is the voice
people fondly remember when their ears threaten to self-destruct after another
remixed disaster. This is a voice that generations of Telugus grew up hearing.
On the occasion of his birthday, Hyderabad has an entire day's worth of programs
lined up, which will be flagged off by Dr. Bala Murali Krishna and will go on
to include a marathon music competition. Winners of the competition will be given
a prize of Rs. 2,000, and will perform later in the evening with veteran musicians
from TV and radio. An orchestra will play the late singer's most popular numbers.
