The flute was originally made popular by a famous cowherd, but there has been no shortage of people who've emulated him to fair success. Here's a contemporary wizard.
Nada Bharathi is organising a 3-day Sampradaya Instrumental Music Festival at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, between 28th and 30th May. Noted instrumentalists like vainika Kaja Subhashini Sastry, violinist Mangalampalli Surya Deepti and flautist V Nagaraju will perform during the festival days.
Today, the final day, V Nagaraju will perform the flute recital with K Venkata Krishna on the violin, P Srinivas Gopalan on the mridangam and B Janardhan on the ghatam. The recital is being organised in memory of Manda Balarama Sarma, a renowned flute vidwan of Andhra Pradesh.
Nagaraju is a senior flautist, and was the foremost disciple of the famous Manda Balarama Sarma in 1972. He is a A-High graded artiste of the AIR, Vijayawada. He is also a staff and A-grade artiste of AIR, Hyderabad. He has performed in most parts of the country, particularly in North India. He has also toured London, Brazil, Singapore and Malaysia, and performed to wide applause and appreciation everywhere.
He won the 1st prize in the All-India AIR Music Competitions in 1980, and had the privilege of receiving this award from the Late M S Subbalakshmi. He received the titles of Venu Gana Vidhya Visharada and Venu Gana Vayidya Praveena from cultural associations.
Nada Bharathi was started in 2000 by a renowned mridangist Yuva Sangeeta Bharathi Paravastu Srinivas Gopalan, who hails from a family of classical musicians. The basic objective of the organisation is to preserve, promote and propogate all forms of classical music, by increasing awareness through regular concerts.
Since its inception, it has conducted more than 500 concerts, concentrating not only on Carnatic music, but also on Hindustani music. The organisation has organised musical concerts of renowned vocalists, violinists, vainikas, mridangists, flautists and vainikas.
