Doctor Chakravarthy bagged the first Golden Nandi award in 1965, also winning the President's Silver Medal in the same year.
Dr. Chakravarthy is the story of a doctor who returns to India after studying abroad, and reunites with his sweetheart. But when he reaches home, he finds that his sister, to whom he is extremely attached, is suffering from lung cancer. On her death bed, she asks her brother to marry her sister-in-law. He honours the promise and sacrifices his own love.
Life had not, however, finished its games with Dr. Chakravarthy. His wife turns out to be a spoilt and selfish woman, and he immerses himself in his hospital and work. He meets Madhavi, a woman who reminds him of his beloved sister, and is drawn to her for solace.
With a cast including A Nageswara Rao, Shaukar Janaki, Savithri, Jaggaiah, Suryakantham and Gummadi, Dr. Chakravarthy is a story of companionship that is not always understood by society. It is a beautiful theme well-handled by director Adurti Subba Rao.
