Seshendra Sarma (1927-2007), a rare combination of a poet and critic, was born on 20th October, at Nagarajupadu in Nellore District. His Mandé Suryudu (Burning Sun), Rakta Rekha (Arc of Blood) and the magnum opus Naa Desam Naa Prajalu (My Country, My People) are treated as benchmarks for modern Indian poetry.
He won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1994 for Kaala Rekha (Arc Of Time), which incidentally is not a poetry collection but comprises 25 critical papers presented in seminars on topics like ancient drama, comparative literature, classical poetry and modern writing. He is also the Hamsa Award recipient from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The beautiful lyric Nidurinche Thotaloki Paata Okati Vacchindi from the film Mutyala Muggu is the only time he penned lyrics for a movie.
