PREVIEW FOR DECCAN DANCE FESTIVAL BY KATHAK KALAKSHETRA
The tombs may be great for some soul-searching, but dancing deserves a better
venue, thought the Department of Tourism. And so, here's a more, er …lively venue
Set up in the year 1983, the Kathak Kalakshetra has been conducting several programs including seminars, workshops and dance recitals in Hyderabad and abroad. The city-based organization is now organizing a 3-day festival of dance along with Department of Tourism.
The festival has been a regular feature since 1991, and is held every year at the Qutb Shahi tombs. Renowned artists like Uma Sharma, Vani Ganapathi, Shobana Narayan, Bharati Shivaji, Kiran Sehgal and others have performed in earlier editions of the festival.
The venue of the 10th annual Deccan Dance Festival has been changed this year to Public Gardens in order to bring it closer to people of the city. At this festival, Luna Poddar (Kathak) from Kolkata will perform on Feb 25, followed by Srikala Bharath from Chennai and Sharmila Mukherjee (Odissi) from Orissa on Feb 26, and Gopika Verma (Mohiniattam) from Kerala and Uma Muralikrishna (Bharatanatyam) on the last day of the festival. The performances will be followed by the interactive sessions.
