On the launch of telugunidhi.com, Raganidhi Events is organising a Telugu musical nite by playback singer Chitra, on 2nd September, at Shilpakala Vedika auditorium.
Heralded as the nightingale of South India, multi-faceted Chitra has built a formidable reputation and repertoire as a playback singer for Hindi and South-Indian films. Born into a family of musicians in Trivandrum in Kerala — her father is the late Krishnan Nair was a well-known singer - Chitra started her music career when she was offered a song by music director M G Radhakrishnan in 1983, in a Malayalam film.
She also sang a duet with Yesudas which was released before her first song. Since then, she sung in several shows of Yesudas and also for his cassettes. The offer which brought Chitra to Chennai was for a Hindi film by K S Gopalakrishnan, Kushi Aur Kushi. But the film was never released.
Called the Nightingale of South-India, Chitra has sung more than 1,500 songs in Telugu, including hits like Jallantha Kavvintha (Geetanjali), Ninnu Kori (Gharshana), Oh Prema Na Prema (Chanti), Abbanee Tiyyani (Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari) and other melodies from Student No. 1, Shiva, Varsham, Shatruvu, Surya IPS, Nuvvu Naaku Nacchavu, Anand, Gang Leader, Assembly Rowdi, Coolie No. 1, Pokiri and Tagore.
With over 11,000 songs to her credit, she has won innumerable awards for songs in all the four South-Indian languages and in Hindi, including five National Awards, several awards by various state governments, the Cinema Express Award and the Screen-Videocon Award, to name a few.
After Lata Mangeshkar, Chitra is the first Indian woman singer to perform at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. She has numerous international concerts to her credit - she has enchanted audiences in USA, UK, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and several other countries with her live performances.
