Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation is presenting a play on the topic of untouchability with Tagore's famous creation 'Chandalika' on 27th February at the Taramati Indoor Auditorium. Renowned actress-director from Kolkata, Usha Ganguli, has directed and acted in this production with a cast of 30 artistes.
Chandalika was written in 1933 by Rabindranath Tagore, and remains as relevant as it was then when we consider the social, political and religious conflicts that plague our society even in the 21st century. The play was also made into a feature film by the late Chetan Anand.
The story is based about Prakriti, an untouchable girl, and her mother Maya, who practises black magic to heal ailing people. The duo is obstracised by the society because they are untouchables. The girl meets a Buddhist monk Ananda, and adopts Buddhism. She meets the Buddha, who addresses the issue of untouchability, and Prakriti ultimately attains Nirvana.
