Some people perform for money, and some people perform for fame. Some people do not perform at all. Yes, tonite, Thyagaraya Gana Sabha witnesses an extremely rare event.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram, in association with Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, and in memory of late Uppalapati Ankaiah, is organising a Carnatic vocal recital by Sangeeta Sahitya Vidhwan Brahmasri H S Gururajachar, on 14th May, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika in Chikkadpally. H G Vasudevan will provide vocal support, while Gopalakrishnan on the mridangam and Mangalampally Suryadeepti on the violin will provide the instrumental support.
Belonging to the Raghavendra Swamy parampara, Gururajachar was born in 1923 and learnt music from Chintalapalli Ranga Rao and Venkata Rao, both asthana vidwans of the Mysore Maharaja. Gururajachar also learned from Palghat Someswar Bhagavathar. A highly talented and senior vocalist, Gururajachar never sang for fame, and for this reason, he had very few concerts, devoting his time to teaching.
He grew to be a great vidwan, teaching music in Mysore and then shifting to Hyderabad in 1945. In Hyderabad, he founded the Sadguru Sangeetha Vidyalay, and his academic services were also sought by the Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram has been organizing classical music shows in memory of Late Uppalapati Ankaiah. As a tribute to the legend, it promotes upcoming and established artists by inviting them to perform in these concerts.
