Only one woman in AP finished 2nd in the National Chess Championships and won 3 Nandis too. It's one of her last performances in India tonite.
Sangam Academy, in association with Suchir India, is organising a Bharatanatyam recital by cine actress Laya, at Ravindra Bharathi on the 6th of October. Laya will be presenting about 8 solo items, lasting 2 hours. The guests expected to attend this recital are Dada Saheb Phalke Dr Akkineni Nageshwar Rao, Jamuna (yesteryear cine actress) and Dr Shobha Naidu (renowned Kuchipudi dancer).
Laya was a child prodigy in both dance and sports, having been a National-Level chess player at the age of 8 and having represented Andhra Pradesh 5 times. She even finished 2nd in the National Chess Championships in 1992, which fetched her a scholarship of Rs. 2700 a year.
She is a disciple of Josyula Sri Ramachandra Murthy since the age of 6. She has about 50 performances to her credit, and has acted in about 39 movies. Her debut was as a child artist in the award-winning movie Bhadram Koduko. Her debut as a heroine was in K Vishwanath's Swayamvaram in 1999. She has won 3 Nandi Awards.
She is currently married to Dr Sri Ganesh, a cancer specialist in California, and plans to shift to the US in November this year, where she will be devoting her time only to dance.
