Yes, you read right - and there are plenty of foreign teams, so you get what you are undoubtedly looking for. And now the spoiler - the organizers know it, and want money.
The Andhra Pradesh Beach Volleyball Players Club, in association with the Sports Authority of AP, is organising the Asian Circuit Beach Volleyball Tournament for men and women, at the Necklace Road, from 4th to 7th July. 17 men's teams and 13 women's teams are taking part in this tournament.
Teams from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines and Iran, besides those from the host nation India, are participating in this tournament. India is fielding 5 teams in the men's and 3 teams in the women's sections.
The teams will be divided into four groups, and the matches will be played in the league basis. The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout phase, from which the top four play in the semifinals and the winners clash in the finals.
The total prize money for the tournament is $24,000, sponsored by the GVK Group. The winner will pocket $3,000 and the runners-up will take home $2,500. For the first time, teams finishing 9th to 16th will be given $250 each.
The tournament will be inaugurated by the home minister K Jana Reddy at 6:00pm on 4th July, and the matches start at 2:00pm everyday from 5th July. The winner will be decided through the best-of-three sets format, with each set being of 21 points.
A highly entertaining game, beach volleyball is played on sand courts with two players on each side. The sport was included in the Olympics in 1996, and is quickly gaining popularity all over the world. Brazil and USA are the top teams in the world while China and Thailand are very strong competitors in Asia.
