Chiranjeevi rode on this one all the way to the Nandi and the Filmfare.
Chiranjeevi plays the role of Madhava, a low caste servant of Hema (Meenakshi Seshadhri) and her father (Jhandhyala). He also acts in a theater, where he plays Lord Shiva. In order to pay for Hema's elder sister's wedding, Madhava sells his cows, and gives the money discreetly to them.
When Hema's father realizes what Madhava has done, he gifts his manuscripts to Madhava. Madhava goes to town to have them printed, but upon returning he finds that Hema has been declared insane and shut in an asylum. Hema has gone into a shock after her brother-in-law tried to rape her, and in the process, killed her sister. Madhava pretends being insane himself and enters the asylum, where he undergoes hardships in order to save Hema.
Apadhbandhavudu has won many awards, including the Best Actor Nandi award for Chiru, as also the Best Actor award at the Filmfares. A critically acclaimed film by, director K Viswanath, it is the only movie in which Chiranjeevi has appeared in a deglamourous role.
