The annual Golconda Culture Festival, a grand celebration of music, dance & history organised by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Ltd, is on from 18th to 20th April this year, at the Taramati Baradari Cultural Complex, Gandipet Road, Ibrahimbagh. Today, the final day of the festival, K V Satyanarayana and his disciples, Ajay Kumar, Srinivas, P V Narasimha Rao, Mohan, Deepthi, Poornima, Surendra, Padusha and Rangababu, will perform a Kuchipudi dance ballet on Amukta Malyada.
Amukta Malyada was written by Srikrishna Devaraya of the Vijayanagar dynasty, and is actually more of an epic poem about the life of Godaa Devi (Andal), and her marriage to Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam. She speaks in a lot of the verses, talking throughout much of the poem, through the words of Srikrishna Devaraya.
K V Satyanarayana is a well-known Kuchipudi dancer, choreographer, lyricist, movie dance director and composer from Eluru. He started Sri Satya Kuchipudi and Janapada Nritya Academy in India to coach a stream of disciples in both classical and folk dances. He was the dance director for some acclaimed Telugu movies such as Sruthilayalu, Swarna Kamalam, Sutradharulu and Swathi Kiranam. In 1988, he won the prestigious Nandi Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, for choreography in the movie Sruthilayalu.
In 1990, he won the Bharata Muni Award, and was also honored with the title of Natyakavisarada. He was appointed the Asthana Natyacharya for the Sri Lakshmi Narayana temple of Youngstown, Ohio, and for the Sri Shirdi Sai Baba temple of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
